Frankford CDC, Rep. Tony Payton graduate 5 residents in computer literacy training during Philly Tech Week

Five Frankford residents completed a three-day computer literacy certification program hosted during Philly Tech Week in partnership between state Rep. Tony Payton and the Frankford CDC.

The five residents celebrated with a small graduation ceremony last Thursday. The residents who completed the course were the following:

PhillyHistory.org posts historical technology photos for Philly Tech Week

To celebrate the second annual Philly Tech Week presented by AT&T, the Department of Record’s PhillyHistory.org highlighted a handful of technology shots.

Philly Geek Awards 2012 will be held Aug. 17, tickets now live

The second annual Philly Geek Awards will be held Friday, Aug. 17, announced the organizing Geekadelphia team during Philly Tech Week.

An initial batch of 100 tickets for $15 were made live here.

In making the announcement, the Geekadelphia team, led by co-founder Eric Smith, dropped a new website and announced the categories. The event will be again held at the Academy of Natural Sciences on the Ben Franklin Parkway.

As first reported by Technically Philly, Mayor Nutter signed yesterday an Executive Order pledging greater transparency through data releases.

Executive Orders are good at making clear top-level goals, but the hard work is left to be implemented: namely entrenching departmental workflows to ensure its objectives.

SnipSnap wins Switch 3 startup demo competition: download free mobile couponing iPhone app

At Switch Philly 3: investor Ellen Weber, Mayor Michael Nutter, SnipSnap Founder Ted Mann, SnipSnap VP of Product Kyle Martin, Josh Kopelman of First Round Capital and SnipSnap CTO Kostas Nasis.

SnipSnap, an iOS application to digitize coupons, won out Switch Philly 3, the startup demo event, Wednesday night. An Android version of the app is coming, Mann has said.

Presented by founder Ted Mann, who won Mobile Monday to earn the spot, was eager to add a piece of news to his Switch presentation, having pitched his app publicly before. And he did. SnipSnap is now live in the App Store.

Open Data Policy: Mayor Nutter to sign Executive Order pledging data releases

Mayor Nutter is due to sign an Executive Order this afternoon establishing an Open Data Policy.

Mayor Nutter will sign today an Executive Order to establish an Open Data Policy for the City of Philadelphia, according to internal staff with knowledge of the effort.

The announcement comes during the second annual Philly Tech Week presented by AT&T.

The Executive Order had been long rumored and follows the more than year-long growth of a public-private coalition pushing for a clearer strategy on using data to make government more transparent and efficient.

Knight Arts Challenge: 2012 winners unveiled, include the Hacktory, 3D video mapping

More than $2.75 million was pledged to 35 organizations at the second annual Knight Arts Challenge Philadelphia unveiling Monday, including a handful of technology-driven projects.

See all the projects listed here. Watch video of the winners above. The funds range from $10,000 to a high of $400,000, which was dedicated to the Center City District for art work on a renovated Dilworth Plaza adjacent to City Hall.

The documentary project focusing on the growth of a technology community in Philadelphia will have a name and a released trailer before the second annual Philly Tech Week presented by AT&T is finished.

During the Friday night Philly Tech Week Signature Event, documentarians David Dylan Thomas and Maurice Gaston will debut a short two-minute preview of their web series that aims to capture how an innovation community of creatives took root in what has been seen as a violent post-industrial city of decline.

The title of the full series, due out in the fall, will be included in the trailer.
