Event Highlights for March 15-21, 2010

The big event this week isn’t in Philly at all. But Philadelphia has quite a presence in Austin, Texas, this week for South by Southwest, for sure. Our reporter Sean Blanda is hot on the trial, chasing down Philly’s representatives. He’ll follow-up with a report later this week.

That said, there’s some great opportunities here in Philadelphia, too. Join Microsoft’s Malvern branch for its CloudCamp unconference to discuss the growing cloud computing industry and Philly Startup Leaders hosts a fishbowl of City of Philadelphia’s Digital Philadelphia vision with city officials.

Event Highlights for March 8-14, 2010

Can we all stop and agree how freakin’ nice it was this weekend?

And there’s even better news: everyday this week is slated to have a high of at least 55 degrees. So ditch your winter coat and skip the usual routine of heading home straight after work. Our event calendar is jam packed you have no excuse to miss out.

This week: the 140 conference strikes again, PSL get happy (and possibly political) and 8static throws down with a free show.

Event Highlights for March 1-7, 2010

Updated 3/4, 7:32 a.m.: Fixed a misspelling.

Maybe it’s wishful thinking, but are there more birds chirping and an opportunity to wear one less layer before we head out the door? Is that Spring coming? We sure hope so.

If you make it out this week, you’ll want to stop by either Ignite Philly 5 or Net Squared Net Tuesday, on, uh, Tuesday evening. Or heck, do both. Who’s to stop you, rebel? On Thursday, hit up the PHP Area Meetup Group, where they’re gonna tell you that Notepad is just, like, sooo not cool anymore; by itself, anyway. Whatever you decide, just remember: the weeks of this cold abyss are quickly coming to an end.

The sidewalks are clear by now, so you haven’t any excuses for missing out on the technology event offerings on our weekly calendar.

There’s plenty to do, whether you’re down with coding, design, marketing or heck, just looking for an open bar and some good old-fashioned networking.

On Tuesday, the newly-formed Philadelphia Semantic Web Meetup gathers again for introductions and discussion of the group’s direction. Wednesday, Philly Startup LeadersEntrepreneurs Unplugged kicks off for the first time in 2010. Thursday, the Philadelphia Interactive Marketing Association hosts a free networking event in the ‘burbs, drinks included.

Updated: We’re also knee deep in the city’s 11th annual Black Family Technology Awareness Week, as we reported. See a list of events here.

Event Highlights for February 1-7, 2010

We dream of the day when artists, forward-thinking nonprofits and public safety tech professionals get together for some seriously game-changing innovations. For now, we can only hope that each of these communities’ spots on our calendar this week will result in some cross-pollination, and perhaps some collaborative brainstorming.

Law enforcement officials from hundreds of organizations
are in town this week for a three-day, 1,500-attendee conference covering technology in public safety. Big Brother, where art thou? Oh, the Marriot.

On Tuesday, NetSquared will continue to amplify issues in nonprofits’ use of social media to achieve goals. They’ve gathered some thought-provoking organizations that have used the Twitters and the Facebooks out there to help propel their mission.

Wednesday, Hive76—which has basically owned this events highlights space since it re-opened, with its valuable events—has partnered with artist coalition PositiveSpace to bring the art and hacker communities together, at last.

Event Highlights for January 25-31, 2010

Our calendar continues its upward trajectory this week with an event every night.

On Monday, for less than a Hamilton, you can head on over to the coolest building in the city (that would the Cira Center for those keeping track at home) for Mobile Monday’s DEMO night. It’s a veritable who’s who in the mobile space.

If your business dress code requires you to look more like John Hodgman than Justin Long, stop in and visit the Mac Business User Society at UArts where the group will be talking about the Apple Tablet.

And on Saturday, bring the kids to the Franklin Institute for a life-sized game of “Operation”. And this time, your older brother won’t be bothering you as you try to remove the funny bone.

All events listed on the event calendar are free to attend. Be sure to check our complete calendar for more.

Event Highlights for January 18-24, 2010

You’ve spent the last two weeks getting back in the swing of things, and you’re hoping to close out January as a strong first month. Jump on a couple events this week as the year continues to open up.

On Monday, stretch those learning muscles at Life Sciences 2010, a mid-day event focused on taking a look at how global collaboration is good for the quickly-changing field. It’s something different, but we know there are a lot of smart noggins in this community that can do some great innovation in that sector.

Wednesday, TVBGone creator Mitch Altman heads to Hive76 to help folks build the infomercially-sold TV-ridding kit. We were way into keeping our sets off with a product like this… until HD got cheap. D’oh!

Finally on Friday, join the University City Science Center as it unveils Next Fab Studio, its high-tech, membership-based prototyping lab. We talked to Next Fab founder Evan Malone last week, and the assortment of equipment at the shop seems drool-worthy. UCSC President Steve Tang let us know about his excitement for the lab, too. We’ll be stopping by the new shop later this afternoon, so stay tuned for our preview. If it’s not posted by 6:00 p.m., your dinner is on us!

Event Highlights for January 11 – 17, 2010

Excuse us Philadelphia as we talk ourselves down from the ledge after the thumping that the Cowboys put on the Eagles this weekend.

Lucky for us, we have a whole slew of tech events this week to get our mind off of football and onto our wonderful technology community. For the first time this calendar year, our calendar is packed with events.

Leading off, our city’s first 140 conference packs National Mechanics on Tuesday. Right afterwards, take the El out to Penn for philly.rb’s first meeting of the year. Then, on Wednesday, take advantage of the Free Library’s free small business workshop.

Updated: Added Technically Philly’s Wednesday meetup.

Still recovering from those weekend hangovers? We feel you. There’s not much going on this week, so rest up, friends. It’ll be time to get back in gear soon enough.

Monday, Hive76’s Jack Zylkin will host a guitar effects course, teaching the electronics behind amplifier hacking. Too much Twitter? Facebooked out? Worried that we just made “Facebook” a verb? On Tuesday, NetSquared will help you measure the success of your social networking push. See the deets, after the jump.

Event Highlights for December 28 – January 3, 2010

The kids are home from school this week, and the events calendar looks like it.

Aside from an open house with a growing institution and a new member lunch with the Indyhall boys and girls, this calendar is as empty as reporter Sean Blanda’s social calendar or, uhm, last week’s events roundup.

We can only assume we don’t have anything for the night of Dec. 31 because our technology and entrepreneurship community versions of New Year’s Eve are just like everyone else’s — and that might not involve getting up at 8 a.m. for the Mummer’s Day Parade, even if Kevin Bacon came to their rescue.

Everyone is sure to rebound for a big, bold 2010. We’re going to share our resolutions with you in January — seriously — so why don’t your tech ones with us? For now, the last week of events in 2009.. and one in 2010.
