Event highlights for the week of July 20 – July 26, 2009

Philadelphia, you’re a city of routine, and we like that about you.

Even when the sun is shining and thoughts are drifting toward lounging at the Jersey shore, you aren’t afraid to grab a few drinks and stick to your meetup schedule.

Every event on our calendar this week is part of a monthly series, and most involve beer.

On Tuesday, grab a brew with Philly.rb at their pub night. We hear that they specifically hit on people using Ruby puns. And by “hear” we mean “hope.” The next day, IdeaBlob hosts BlobLive, its monthly open mic for entrepreneurs. Step on up and give an elevator pitch to complete strangers.

To close out the week, Philly Mapping and GIS host “Mappy Hour.” Talk cartography and get in on the group’s open source map project at a local watering hole.

All events listed on the event calendar are free to attend. Be sure to check our complete calendar for more information, or follow us past the jump.

Events highlights for the week of June 29 – July 5, 2009

When there’s only a handful of events in the region, it makes this job easy. But the truth is, we prefer a challenge.

Unfortunately, there’s only a few events scattered on Tuesday and Wednesday this week. But hey, this way, you have practically no excuse to miss any.

On Tuesday, the Philly Ruby enthusiasts of Philly.rb bring back their popular Hack Night, where you sit in comfy chairs, plop your laptop next to your latte, and get cracking on yours and others project hurdles.

SEO Grail meets Tuesday with a talk from Web development company Goldstein Media LLC’s Seth Goldstein to discuss, what else? How to massage the Google.

The following day, DreamIt Ventures will show race film “Truth in 24.” The film has all you could ask for in a race film: action, adventure, drama and not a single sign of Vin Diesel. Oh yeah, and NFL Films Director of Project Management Alan M. Brown will be there to discuss how it all went down.

Events highlights for the week of June 15 – June 21, 2009

Yeah, so last week was a little thin for Philly tech events. You were bored, confused, even lost without a daily dose of tech goings-on.

Think of it as a savings account for all the cool stuff going on this week. You didn’t want to go out in that rain, anyway.

On Monday, hit up Philly.rb‘s Pub Night and don’t even say you’re sorry that you once were down with Python. Can’t we all just get along? Central NJ Drupal will host an info session Tuesday to help you get involved with the Project. We call it the Project with a capital P because damn if they ain’t been working hard. Maybe it’s time to throw in your two cents.

Wednesday, Mike Welsh of Newgrounds.com and ActionScript coder for Xbox Live Arcade’s best-seller Castle Crashers will lead Philadelphia Flash Users Group‘s discussion on AS3 game development. We never understood why Super Mario went 3D anyway, and we think Mike would agree.

We hate when this happens: a dozen blocks West, Philly Startup Leaders will host a second can’t-be-missed Wednesday night event. Neat Company co-founder Rafi Spero will give his “Unplugged” presentation on the blood, sweat, tears and scanners that went into the company’s successful receipt organization software.

Last but not least, PhillyCHI will host a happy hour to celebrate all things human-computer interaction. Why a happy hour? Because it’s 5 o’clock and someone’s got a bad UI somewhere, that’s why. More details on all of these events after the jump.

All events listed on the event calendar are free to attend. Be sure to check our complete calendar for more information, or follow us past the jump.

Events highlights for the week of May 18 – May 26, 2009

Ready to take a road trip to a magical city that will give you easy access to multimillionaires, let you hook up with people to start the next great independent gaming studio and allow you to listen to a VP at AT&T talk about mobile media?

Well, save your SEPTA tokens, as Philly provides all of that and more this week.

First up is First Round Capitol’s office hours at the World Cafe Live. The event is an informal gathering to discuss all things startup with one of the region’s most well known venture capital firms and is modeled after a college professor’s office hours. If you are up for a short walk, stroll on over to the Cira Center afterward to PANMA’s Mobile Monday. There, listen to a panel stacked with talent discuss Mobile Marketing and Advertising.

If mobile isn’t your thing, make sure you can knock back a few brews with Phillyrb, the city’s Rails user group. We hear if you buy them a few they’ll talk about regular expression syntax for hours.

Continuing University City’s status as center of the tech event universe this week, PANMA is getting together at the Science Center to talk about SEO in 2009, which, we assume, does not involve the <blink> tag.

And lastly, Philly’s game developers are getting together at the Comcast Center to introduce themselves and talk about the future of the group.

All events listed on the event calendar are free to attend. Be sure to check our complete calendar for more information, or follow us past the jump.
