Join us tonight at 6 p.m. for the second ever Switch Philly (presented by InterDigital), where we’ll showcase five companies that we think are in line to be the next big thing.

There, the companies will each get seven minutes to show off what they’ve been working on. The event will demonstrate the great things happening in our backyard that we see everyday here at Technically Philly while giving us all the chance to say “I liked them before they were popular.”

Tickets for Switch close at noon, but you’ll be able to buy them at the door for $10 (cash only).

We’d like to thank InterDigital, Wharton School of BusinessGenacast VenturesMorgan Lewis and VC Deal Lawyer for their support of Switch.

For being a company focused on travel, Catapulter‘s journey to Switch Philly will be quite simple: they’ll only have to walk down the hall.

The company, founded by Penn students and based in Wharton’s VIP incubator aims to pick up where Kayak.com leaves off, allowing users to search across mass transit lines, bus routes and taxi services to provide cheap door-to-door ground travel.

For example, a Catapulter user can easily determine that its cheaper to buy tickets from Philadelphia to New York and from New York to Boston then it is to buy a direct route to Boston, even if the tickets are all for the same bus. The site can also help determine the cheapest (or fastest way) to take trains, cabs and busses to your destination.

Chief marketing officer Jenny Cheng says Catapulter was born when she gave up her car and realized the amount of research needed to piece together a cheap route from city to city.

“Plus my brother always uses me as his personal travel assistant… so I’m always on the computer looking for cheap busses and cheap trains,” says Cheng.

Cheng enlisted the help of Adam Waaramaa, an old coworker from another startup and got to work.

Ohanarama: BrainRewards launches public beta of new family game network

Ohana means ‘family’ in Hawaiian. Ohanarama is the new family game network from a mother, serial entrepreneur and her team.

When: Tues., April 26, 6 p.m.

Ohanarama, which recently launched public beta, is the signature platform from BrainRewards, a co-educational gaming startup co-founded by Jane Hoffer (@janehoffer), the mother of three and president of the Alliance of Women Entrepreneurs.

“The old story is that, yes, adults are flocking to social networks like Facebook,” says Hoffer. “In doing our initial prototyping, we found two really interesting things: that children under 13 are very interested in playing with family online and that there are 70 million grandparents, 50 percent of whom live more than 200 miles from grand kids and there’s no real interactive way for an extended family to play from a distance, other than maybe Skype.”

“So we said, ‘Let’s bridge that.’ The family is the original social network. It’s how kids socialize,” Hoffer says. “So we are taking the best of gaming and the best of social networking and bringing it to the fore to the multi-generational family online.”

Like most founders, Mary Hagy says her company is creating the product that she needed months ago.

Born out of her frustrations with the level of video advertising analytics when she was an executive director of an online video campaign in 2009, Hagy says she thinks there’s an opportunity for a company that can take video analytics past the “views” metric.

Along with Jodie Morgan and Karen Narwold, Hagy founded Queen Village-based cWyze to add a layer of user interactions on top of videos to help provide additional metrics for video campaigns. Companies like Hulu have long been experimenting with similar features, but cWyze hopes to take that to the next level.

[Full Disclosure: cWyze will be demoing at Technically Philly's Switch event on April 26, a part of Philly Tech WeekTickets are available here.]

And we’re back.

One of the great parts of our job is constantly coming across interesting companies and products. However, we feel that many companies don’t get the attention they deserve. As a result we created Switch Philly, a rapid-fire demo event where five companies get seven minutes to show off the cool things they are working on.

Last time around Zecozi, P’unk Ave, Azavea, Myna Music and Packlate demoed to a crowd of 160 at the University of the Arts (watch the complete event here).

For the latest edition, the Spring 2011 Switch Philly will be held at Huntsman Hall at the Wharton School of Business in University City and will be one of the cornerstones of Philly Tech Week on Tuesday, April 26th.

We’re currently on the hunt for companies to demo. Our only requirements:

  • You have a consumer-facing product
  • You are based in or around Philadelphia
  • You have a live demo ready, no powerpoints

If you’re interested, please fill out this form and further information is available at SwitchPhilly.com. We promise to get back to you as soon as possible.

And stay tuned for demo videos from the Fall 2010 Switch until Philly Tech Week.
