BarCamp NewsInnovation is this Saturday

Just as passionate as we are about Philly’s tech scene, we’re downright crazy about local journalism. Heightening our awareness of the city’s news ecosystem is a recently released report by J-Lab that recommends that the William Penn Foundation allocate money to support local public affairs reporting.

That’s why we have organized the second annual BarCamp NewsInnovation, a chance for anyone interested in news to gather and talk about the innovative things they are doing at Temple’s Annenberg Hall this Saturday from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. Just like BarCamp Philly, this event is FREE.

This year, representatives (see full attendee list) from newspapers around the country, journalism startups and academics have signed up and we’d like to invite our community as well. At the very least to show some Philly pride, but hopefully to help add some fresh voices in the discussion around news and technology.

Technically Philly offering tech insight for Philadelphia magazine’s Philly Post

Yesterday, by way of a link, we forged an informal partnership with Philadelphia magazine‘s new Philly Post daily news blog. From here, we’ll be offering our insight on Philadelphia technology to a broader audience of tech-interested individuals, first hinted at last week. As is true of so much of our effort, this is yet another opportunity to voice the triumphs and concerns of the community to a broader audience in the city and beyond.

I’ll be writing as Philly Mag’s online tech columnist, offering a fresh and often more in-depth and behind-the-scenes look at the goings-on of Technically Philly’s daily news. For those of you who have been following along regularly, the weekly column at Philly Post will be a different taste of what you already likely read between the lines in our news entries. For those just joining us, we hope you’ll enjoy the breadth of technology content that we’re humbly able to offer here.

Celebrate Technically Philly’s first birthday TONIGHT

As we announced last week, we’re excited to be celebrating tonight our first year covering Philadelphia’s technology community.

We considered blowing it out with Jägerbombs, shots and perhaps a mechanical bull, but that just doesn’t feel right. We have a lot more work to do, and with that in mind we’ve partnered with Philly Startup Leaders to host a business fishbowl at the University of Arts before we kick back with a few light drinks.

We want to discuss with you how to make Technically Philly a sustainable news product at a time when sustainable news products are struggling. Let’s talk about how we can best serve you and create a stronger portal and mouthpiece for the region’s technology community. Register here for that biz fishbowl. Events Highlights for Feb 22-28th, 2010

Thanks to some warm weather, our city streets are now actually, you know, walkable.

No longer do we all have to ice skate to SEPTA, and that means that heading out to the week’s tech events should be as easy as ever. Although, the weather gods seem to be brewing the next storm, so you’d best take advantage while you can.

First and foremost, Black Family Technology Awareness Week has a handful of remaining events this week, including the Changing Expectations Career Tour for anyone considering getting into tech.

On Tuesday, head on over to Liberty Plaza to learn everything you ever wanted to know about mobile programming. The next day you should come out to hear Technically Philly present its business plan to the Philly Startup Leaders and other attendees. Even if you aren’t into sustainable journalism (but, let’s be honest: everyone’s into journalism’s business models… right?), come out for $2 beers and $3 well drinks. And lastly, after work on Friday, TrendCamp will help us all discover the trends that will come to define 2010.

Technically Philly to celebrate birthday with Philly Startup Leaders Fishbowl

As you may have heard, dear reader, Technically Philly celebrated its first birthday last week on February 9.

After twelve months of covering startups, investments, city government policy and general technology news, we are still hard at work trying to make Technically Philly a sustainable source of tech news for the region.

We have our own ideas about how this will look, making efforts to build up or Jobs Board as well as offering detailed advertising packages. However, we wanted to throw open our revenue strategy to you, our readers, and the community-at-large, for criticism and advice.

That is why we are partnering with Philly Startup Leaders to be the subject of the group’s next Fishbowl at the University of Arts on Wednesday, February 24 at 7:30 p.m. REGISTER HERE.

Temple interns to report on city technology issues

You just might see some new bylines pop up here at Technically Philly in the coming months.

Chelsea Leposa and Jared Pass will be among the first. They come to us as interns from Temple University’s journalism capstone class, the Multimedia Urban Reporting Lab, which features a neighborhood-focused newsroom that publishes to the Philadelphia Neighborhoods news site. Thusly, Leposa and Pass will be chasing down stories on Philadelphia technology issues and those working to remedy them.

Technically Philly featured on Chariot Tech podcast

On Friday, TP’s Sean Blanda was the lone guest on the Chariot Tech Cast, a podcast about tech hosted by Ken Rimple of Fort Washington-based Chariot Solutions [download the episode here]. Chariot was behind the Emerging Technology for the Enterprise conference earlier this year.

Though the podcast is for a national audience, TP kept it strictly Philly, chatting about the prospect of a “Philicon Valley,” the big stories we are working on and the roots of TP. Somewhere in there, the Jonas Brothers are mentioned.

The conversation is only 20 minutes long, so give it a listen while catching up on your weekend email. And, while we are at it, can we all agree that Ken has the smooth voice of a 60′s late night radio DJ?
